Youth hostel Brežice - Slovenia

Brezice lies at the spot where Sava River meets the Krka. Centuries ago the city successfully defended itself against Turkish invasions and it took all benefits from natural giveness and geographic  location. Brezice lies directly by the highway and railway Ljubljana-Zagreb.

The town has a rich history. Through the centuries the river Sava dictated the building of the town centre on its left bank. The town is fortified with city walls developed near the mighty castle where trade and crafts developed during the Middle ages. Today the museum, Posavski muzej holds Posavje's rich collection of cultural heritage including archeological, ethnological, history art and history collections.  The round Water Tower is also an emblem of Brežice. It had an important role in history because it helped in providing the locals with drinking water. A specific monument to Brežice is also the St. Lawrence's and St. Rocus church, German house, National house, Town hall, The Franciscan monastery, leftovers of city walls and double bridge over the Sava and the Krka river. The bridge gives the town a special charm. It has two arches above the river Sava and one above the river Krka, and a uniquely designed parapet.

Over 200 years ago, there were thermal water springs discovered in Čateško polje. Thermal water has beome a red thread in the growth of Terme Čatež which developed into the largest Slovenian natural health resort. It has the largest outdoor pool complex and over 10.000 square meters of thermal water surfaces with 10 pools. Winter thermal riviera offers 1.800 square meters of thermal water surfaces. The guests of Terme Čatež are also provided with different programmes for health keeping and strengthening. Programmes are offered in the Health Centre, the Health & beauty Centre and in the Spa & Wellness Centre.

To its visitors, Brežice offers a rich gastronomic  experience. There are two wine roads: Podgorjanska wine road and Bizeljsko-sremiška wine road. Podgorjanska  runs on the right side of the river Sava.  Various varieties of grape are grown there. Cviček, Slovene speciality, is the most famous wine in the Dolenjska wine-growing region.

The landscape offers many opportunities for active recreation in every season. The diversity of landscape offers pleasant cycling on the plain and the sorrounding hills. There are ten checkpoints on the 97 kilometer marked trail. Those who like to walk, can choose between the Brezice mountain path, Bizeljsko footpath, Artiče fruit path, Sromlje footpath ... The river Krka offers boating and for those who like other activities there is a new Wakepark. For others who enjoy playing golf, they will find their paradise on a golf course next to Mokrice castle.

Lots of concerts, performances of folklore, theatre, literature, and dance groups, photo and art exhibitions represent the core of Brezice's cultural beat. It all starts in the spring with the carnival in Dobova (fašjenk) and continues in the summer with with the event »Brežice, my town« at the end of June. In the summer, lovers of classical music can enjoy concerts of early music, organized by the SEVIQC Brezice Festival.
