Climbing Slovenian hills

Planjava and Brana

The weather forecast was bad for the first weekend in August so I could only climb on Planjava and Brana, two peaks in Kamnik-Savinja Alps, on Sunday. After a cloudy Saturday morning I was optimistic for the rest of the day as I wanted to climb to the mountain cottage in Kamniško sedlo the same day, sleep there and then climb both hills well rested on Sunday morning.

After lunch we drove to Logarska valley with a stop at the inn Pevc, also known as hostel Ljubno ob Savinji. After dessert, which we skipped at home, we drove to the heart of Logarska valley to the cottage near Rinka waterfall and then continued to the heart of our mountains. The car park was empty and so was Rinka waterfall. When I go past this waterfall, I always admire it. And then I slowly continue my way up. Stairs, a bridge, roots that cut your way and soon we were on Okrešelj. We met some climbers and young families in the cottage and looked up to the mountain pass, our goal of this day. It was my first time climbing alone from Okrešelj to Kamniško sedlo. What a wonderful forest trail! First it runs through the forest, then it goes to the high grass and then you swoosh between pine trees and then the view opens up. I had a smile on my face. And truly, I was left speechless. I told to the girls – Look at that, look at this. Some climbers came across our way and they told us that there’s a strong wind on the mountain pass Kamniško sedlo. The sky was full of clouds. Before we started climbing, we put on our helmets and bravely started our path. The path is well secured and very safe and we were soon back on a path, which lead us to the mountain pass. The wind was really strong but I couldn’t resist searching for edelweiss. I found them a little later, by the mountain cottage. I was amazed by the views on Logarska valley, Brana, Turska gora and Planjava mountains. Only wind was disturbing the peace. But it didn’t matter. I was high in the mountains with wind in my hair.

Some climbers slept in the cottage, it was peaceful and warm.  I was looking forward to the next day and I wanted to wake up early to climb on Planjava, but the others didn’t listen to me. We started our way to Planjava at seven in the morning. The mountain was surrounded by fog but as an optimist, I was convinced it will go away and we will be able to see the mountain in all its glory. A careful step, a break here and there. I looked at Mrzla gora and joked that this one is waiting for me and my friend this year. The fog was hiding the beauty of our country but we were persistent and didn’t give up. We came to a crossroad and I made a promise in my mind that I’ll be back soon. The peak is near. Yay! We were at top of the hill, which I wasn’t expecting. If the weather would be clear, we wouldn’t be so surprised.

We didn’t stay on the top too long. Slowly and carefully we went to the cottage. When we were going down, we met some climbers going up, but we still had mountain Brana waiting for us. After a lunch in a full cottage, we ran back to the mountains. First only two of us in our group wanted to climb on Brana but at the end, all four of us went up. Brana was more popular, a line of climbers was going up. We had to be a little more careful on the path, but we finally reached the top of 2253 metre high mountain. The fog was going away slowly so the view was nicer.

You always meet new faces in the mountains and it’s interesting hearing other stories, sometimes you even cross path with them somewhere else.

After we came from mountain Brana, we stopped at the pasture in front of the cottage and said goodbye to the mountains. Wishes are hidden in the heart and you always have to follow the heart. So I soon visited Logarska valley again.
