Rotterdam Splash in a European Seaport

Travel guide for a four-day trip

The European coastal city of Rotterdam, with the largest port in Europe, has grown from a small fishing village formed along the Rotte River to the second-largest city in the Netherlands. Rotterdam is a city with a population of one million people today. Rotterdam became a cultural centre and an urban environment with interesting architecture after the Second World War, when Rotterdam was completely rebuilt after its destruction. Rotterdam's other name, the Gateway to Europe, refers to the roads, railways and waterways that make up the city's urban infrastructure. The important monument De verwoeste stad, or The Destroyed City, is a cultural landmark commemorating the medieval part of the city, symbolising the lost city with a 6.5 metre high bronze statue. To see how the city looks like today, read our latest travel tips for a trip to the modern Rotterdam.

Why go on the waterways?

The best adventures start in the Port of Rotterdam, where you can book your ticket for the Rotterdam splash, which takes place on the surface of the river Maas. We have put together four of the best offers for an unforgettable experience with an amphibious vehicle, water taxi, speedboat and water bus. The first offer for sightseeing on city roads goes right on into the river, as this is only possible with a vehicle designed to drive on land and in the riverbed. Rotterdam's water taxi and speedboat rides can also take you to the village of Kinderdijk and the city of Dordrecht. Here you will see a Dutch speciality, a windmill and the historical centre of the Dutch Venice.

Kijk-Kubus – Blaak Forest

A couple of days in Rotterdam can be a traveller's experience to see architectural highlights such as the Kijk-Kubus, an architectural masterpiece by architect Piet Blom, which houses service providers such as the Kijk-Kubus Museum House and the Hostelling International accommodation Stayokay Rotterdam. The famous building was created with the concept of "living as an urban roof" and is one of the most interestingly designed architectures of the 1970s in Europe. The proximity to Kijk-Kubus opens up culinary delights at the Markthal market and the Fenix Food Factory, where culinary flavours for everyone are gathered. The road to the second market leads across Erasmusbrug, a bridge named after the Renaissance humanist Desiderius Erasmus. Take a trip to Rotterdam and have the best experience in a European port.
