Winter is a very beautiful season. Its magical snowy days, the cold weather, the food and drinks we can enjoy during this time are marvellous. In Slovenia, and to be more precise at Kranjska Gora, we can see a charming winter land with lots of snow and outdoor activities to enjoy.
How to get there? By car, train or bus you can visit this wonderful place. Also, there are shuttle services you could contact in the case you are coming by airplane to Slovenia.
Where to sleep? From own experience I strongly recommend the
Hostel Barovc. Before you get to judge the place, let me tell you that this is not a regular hostel, not at all. All bedrooms in the hostel are cosy, very clean and each one has its own bathroom. You can also enjoy a nice view of nature. Moreover, Hostel Barovc offers good breakfast and delicious homemade dinner with genuine Slovenian food. At the hostel you can find books and board games to spend a nice time with family or friends. Right in front the Hostel you can walk around Lake Jasna, this place is extremely beautiful. At the time I visited the place the lake was frozen, but the view was amazing. You should bring some dry bread to feed the ducks at Lake Jasna since there are plenty of them.
In addition to the hostel's excellent location, you can visit “Pišnica” a stunning mountain stream. The path to get there starts from
Barovc hostel.
If you wish to visit the town you only need a 10 minute walk from Hostel Barovc to get there. In the town you will find ski slopes, an ice skating rink, casinos, coffee-houses, bakeries and restaurants. There is also a cute petite market with small wooden houses where local products are sold. You will find things like home-made baked goods, handicrafts, woollen clothes, and more.
Now, let us pretend that you forgot to bring with you some winter clothes and you want to ski or go and play in the snow, do not worry. In Kranjska Gora you will find a large variety of nice places to shop for clothes.
Maybe you have heard about
Planica. Planica is famous for ski jumping. Here the ski jumping world competition takes place. It is located in Rateče, very close to Kranjska Gora. For more information here is the website:

Additionally, Tamar Valley is close to Planice. This popular hiking destination is situated in
Triglav National Park - the popular Slovenian gem with luscious green forests, hills, rivers, creeks and animals. If you are a lover of nature, you should definitely add Triglav National Park to your “must-visit” list.
People who enjoy hiking should take the Tamar Valley hiking path. I've tried it, and let me tell you that walking on the snow is not easy, however I did love it. For this, you need a pair of good hiking boots, a wind proof jacket and warm clothes, but do not over dress or you will only sweat and walk around all wet.
After having a good hike and conquering the physical fatigue battle, one gets to be hungry. At the end of the path up on the hill, you will find a typical Slovenian cottage - the only one, by the way. There you can enjoy really tasty meals. I am pleased to say that Slovenian food is delightful. Whether you are a vegetarian or not, you will always find something to eat according to your wishes, and besides, what is a cultural experience without even trying the food? I always think that if you want to visit new places, experience different cultures and so on, one has to at least try the food that those different cultures have to offer. So do not be picky!
My last day at Kranjska Gora ended with a hike to the Peričnik waterfall. I started to walk from Mojstrana. The duration was around 90 minutes to reach the waterfall. The last step to see the waterfall was worth the fantastic scene I witnessed up there.
Three days were not enough to visit and see all or most of the fabulous things the region has to offer. Nevertheless, I am very satisfied about the whole experience in the beautiful surroundings with the wonderful and serviceable people I met at Kranjska Gora.
