Billund is a small town in Jutland, Denmark, that has a population of only about 6,000, but it’s particularly interesting because of a world-famous toy. This is the place where the headquarters of the LEGO Company and the factory that produces about 90% of all the company’s products. The Lego Group was founded in 1932 and the name has its origin in the Danish words “leg godt”, which means “play well”.
In the first half of 2014 the Lego Group became the largest toy company in the world. But the Lego company won’t be the only thing that’ll catch your eye in Billund because you’ll also have a chance to visit the Legoland theme park. It opened on 7 June 1968 and is located next to the Lego factory and Billund Airport, and it’s seen more than 50 million visitors up to this day. It is this very number of visitors that makes Legoland the most popular attraction in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. Among the most interesting things one can find Mini Land that is located in the heart of Legoland. You can admire the landscape, landmarks and buildings from all over Denmark built from 25 million Lego pieces in a ratio of 1:20, as well as landmarks from Sweden, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands, but you can also see the Statue of Liberty, the Acropolis of Athens and even Star Wars. You can even find an Imagination Zone where you can enter a 600-seat studio with 4D cinema that will provide daily film entertainment. Of course, there is no shortage of wild rides and picturesque travel, even to North and South Poles.
Legoland, however, isn’t the only attraction in Billund, even though that’s mostly the very reason people visit the town. If you’re interested in history, you can check out the Vandel Museum that was once a Danish air force bunker, where you can see how the German occupying forces started building an airport in Vandel in 1943, which forced around 800 people to leave their homes. You can also visit the Givskud Zoo that opened as early as 1969, though the only residents at the time were lions. Today, the zoo is much bigger and it even has a safari that lets visitors drive through in their cars, and it also has the largest number of lions in Europe. Of course, you can travel to other parts of Denmark from Billund and you can find some inspiration here.
If you decide to extend your stay and also visit Copenhagen, you can stay in the Copenhagen City hostel, the largest city hostel in Europe with 18 storeys and a wonderful view, plus it offers 1020 beds. Or you can remain on the same island where you landed in the first place and stay at the Kolding Hostel that was built in Kolding in 1938 and has a historical atmosphere.
