What Does Geneva Offer Its Travellers

Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland with a population of a little over half a million and its suburbs also reach into France. It’s known as one of the world’s most successful business centres, but that doesn’t mean you’ll only find serious businessmen rushing form one meeting to the next, but also live music and modern clubs, antique shops and a flea market.

Geneva’s attractions

Attractions in Geneva are quite important – this is the place where you’ll find CERN or the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which is the largest particle physics laboratory and the birthplace of the world wide web, and it’s also open for guided tours where you won’t be shown the Large Hadron Collider, but visiting the laboratories will surely be incredibly interesting.

You can already see the Geneva’s water fountain with its jet of water reaching up to 140 metres and its water being pleasantly refreshing if you get close enough. Another of Geneva’s attraction is the St. Pierre Cathedral whose construction began in the 11th century. This is also where the reformer John Calvin gave sermons in the 16th century.

If you’re planning on leaving the city, there’s the Salève mountain nearby, which is technically already in Frane, but the Genevan took it as their own. If you’re not into climbing, you can take the cable car up to 1,379 metres above sea level and marvel at the view of the city and the lake. In Geneva, you’ll also find every woman’s friend – chocolate – at every turn. Chocolate shops are practically everywhere and so is handmade chocolate. Treat yourself to a trip to Geneva and find your favourite chocolate!

Where to stay in Geneva

If you plan on exploring the rest of Switzerland from Geneva, you can stay at hostels from the Hostelling International network. The Klosters Youth Hostel is a perfect starting point if you want to explore the Swiss peaks or relax in thermal water. The Baden Youth Hostel, on the other hand, will take you back in the previous century, since it’s a former stable turned into accommodation. It’s perfect for sports enthusiasts because its surroundings are laced with numerous hiking trails, and there are also sports and recreation facilities and a pool nearby.
