Mobility: Inclusive Travel and Stay

Content
What are the most sustainable types of transport? What are the main obstacles for differently abled guests? What steps can we take?

Sustainable tourism is tourism, that is open to all and breaks down barriers to access. Travelling has become easier and we need to be conscious about the way we travel. Plane, car, boat, we have an impact on the world through our choices.

We believe that benefits of travelling should be inclusive to all, thus HI hostels around the globe are encouraged to adjust their accommodation accordingly. Every design decision has the potential to include or exclude customers. Inclusive design enables everyone to participate equally, confidently and independently and provide the hostelling experience of the widest range of people.

We are proud to present our star projects this month and we are even prouder that one of them comes from Slovenia.

HI Slovenia Ars Viva Hostel is located in Stari trg pri Ložu, about 60 kilometres from Ljubljana. They offer bike tours for people with special needs, giving people with special needs a chance to test out adaptive bikes and experience the impressive bike routs of the green Karst region. They also offer mouth and foot painting summer camp, which will definitely get you inspired by the beautiful cultural and natural heritage of Notranjska region.

HI Hostels in Alberta, Canada, are also very successful in this area. They have partnered with the Canadian Paraplegic Association in 2011 and began to make wilderness experience available to travellers on the Ice Fields Parkway and Alberta Rockies.

And last but not least, DJH Bavaria is part of the project “Tourism for All”, which is both an information and rating system as well as a label in the field of accessible tourism that applies throughout Germany. Since 2015, 16 youth hostels in Bavaria went through the certification process of this label. The hostels are equipped with different labels, which tell the disabled how the hostel is adjusted to their needs.
