The brand new Youth Hostel of Leutesdorf
The Middle Rhine Valley is the most picturesque section of the largest German river. There are romantic scenes showing castles and ruins, towns alongside the river as well as vineyards. On the other hand, the Middle Rhine Valley is full of remarkable biotopes and rich in outstanding cultural monuments.
Situated in the heart of the continent, this cultural landscape is unique in Europe. As the result of unusual geological processes, the Rhine cut through the mountain ridge, and the steep slopes are used for wine-growing since 1.400 years.
Since the 17th century, the Middle Rhine Valley has been considered the epitome of Romanticism on the Rhine. Since then, the myths of this landscape have been the subject of innumerable texts and pictures, and they are known around the world.
With its varied landscape, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is an Eldorado for everyone who likes to be outdoors. Long-distance trails and mountain bike routes inspire cyclists of many different kinds. Long hiking paths wind their way through the Middle Rhine Valley to link German towns or lead nature enthusiasts through fascinating nature reserves and a great variety of landscapes.
The place called Leutesdorf (between Koblenz and Bonn) is proud to be „on the sunny side of the Rhine“. This is why already the Romans started with the culture of wine growing. Even up to the time being the wine-grower are using the steep slopes to cultivate the vines. There are 17 farmers and one millions vines to be found. Following an old tradition the main type is the Riesling, a white and elegant wine.
Peak seasons are Easter Monday and the second weekend in September when big wine festivals are to be held in Leutesdorf. Thousands of people are coming from far away to pass through these events and to see the floats.
Leutesdorf is part of the Limes hiking tour. Limes is the name of border between the Roman Empire and the „free (ancient) Germany“. Nowadays there are copies of Romans buildings like watchtowers, forts, palisades and ramparts to have realistic feeling for the fortifications of former times. There is also a special museum concerning the daily life of the „roman world“.
An old monastery in Leutesdorf has been changed into a brand new, modern Youth Hostel. It opens on 1st of June, 2015. The Youth Hostel has a family friendly character and offers 160 beds. The sleeping rooms are all equipped with showers and WC. Wheelchair users are welcome.
The monastery is classified as a historical building. Here are ten lounges and seminar rooms to be found. In the new part of the Youth Hostel there are a Cafe-Bar, a bistro and a cosy fire-place. The highlight is the restaurant with a wide terrace and a breathtaking view over the river Rhine.
