Back in early September the normally tranquil Ennerdale Valley in the Lake District was filled with vehicles carrying film crew, producers and their equipment – why? Well, YHA Black Sail played host to a couple of people who may be familiar to some, architect George Clarke and his master craftsman friend, Will Hardie. They came to film an episode of the Channel 4 series, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, a show that explores the extraordinary world of small builds, where people turn tiny spaces into the most incredible places to live, work and play.
Only accessible by foot or on bike, and a two and a half mile trek from the nearest road, England’s most remote hostel,
YHA Black Sail, is the epitome of secluded, remote and tranquil.
This former shepherd’s bothy is a shrine for fell walkers and it’s easy to see why. It’s off the grid location in the mountains of the central Lake District means there’s no Internet, television or decent mobile connection. It’s in total isolation. In other words, it’s perfect.
If you’re looking for exciting adventures and mountains to conquer, Black Sail’s location is hard to beat. Those on walking, hiking and climbing holidays will be delighted with easy access to nearby peaks including the iconic Great Gable and Pillar mountains, High Crag, Red Pike, Kirk Fell and Steeple.
YHA Black Sail is currently available for Exclusive Hire until March 2015 and costs just £129 per night* for mid-week stays. Plus, YHA Members get a further £30 off their stay.

Following a £260,000 renovation in 2013, YHA Black Sail has received great improvements to make it more energy efficient and sustainable. Thermal insulation and sun pipes allow natural light into darker areas of the building, whilst renewable energy and hot water are provided on site by photovoltaic panels and a wood burning stove.
From March onwards YHA Black Sail will be available for individual stays where you can book a bed from only £23 per night.
If YHA Blacksail isn’t available on the dates you’re interested in then we have over 160 properties ranging from Country Manor Houses, to Camping Pods and even a Castle to choose from so you’re bound to find something just right for your next break.
George visited Black Sail as a teenager and remembered the visit with great affection. In this programme, he returns to introduce his friend and collaborator, Will Hardie to YHA Black Sail: »Beautiful to come back to a building. I’ve not slept in for 24 years! Love it!”
YHA Black Sail is featured in the first episode of Series 4, which will be aired on Channel 4, Thursday 23 October at 8pm.
