Wonderful islands and nature

Fiji is comprised of more than 300 islands, so naturally there are plenty of interesting tropical things to see. More than 1,500 species of fish live around the islands. This is also where the classic teenage film, The Blue Lagoon, was shot. The town of Nadi is the tourist capital and a starting point of sorts for exploring the other islands, including the largest island Viti Levu, where you’ll land if you decide to make this wonderful trip. The Mamanuca Islands with the Cloudbreak reef break are perfect for surfers. The waves can even reach up to six metres. Are you bold enough?

If you love nature, you can’t miss the Bouma National Heritage Park on Taveuni Island. It measures 150 square kilometres and includes a rainforest with rare tropical plants as well as various bird species, plus it’s also home to four villages, with each one being responsible for one part of the park. It’s a place where you can see ancient ruins, go kayaking, swim under waterfalls and much more. And speaking of waterfalls, the most popular ones are the Tavoro Waterfalls near the village of Korovou, where you can swim in volcanic pools and take incredible photos. The park is also home to Lake Tagimaucia, where a rare plant of the same name grows, and to Des Voeux Peak, which, at 1,195 metres, offers incredible views.

Those seeking adventure can go swimming with the sharks in the Beqa Lagoon but, generally, Suva is considered as the adventure capital in Fiji. Many people, however, say that the beauty of Fiji cannot compare to the kindness of people who live there.

First-hand experience

Our volunteer Mateja Mazgan also visited Fiji and explored the islands a bit differently, the non-touristy way. She also wrote in her article that Fiji is a land where you get the feeling as if time has stopped. One can’t sense stress or haste, only relaxed and smiley life.

Cheap accommodation in Fiji

There are three hostels in Fiji that belong to the Hostelling International network. In the capital, Nadi, you’ll be welcomed to the Nadi Bay Resort where the prices per night range from 19 euros upwards, but they say their mission is for you to get as many unforgettable memories with new friends and new smiles.

Did you know?

  • Fiji has 333 islands and 223 of them are uninhabited. You can buy your very own island for a couple of millions. Mel Gibson, for example, bought Mago Island in 2005 for 15 million dollars.
  • It’s incredibly impolite to wear a hat and sunglasses in the villages in Fiji, unless you’re the village chief.
  • One of the superstitions the locals believe in says that coconuts have eyes and that they watch for certain people on whose heads to fall. So, if a coconut falls on your head, be prepared for some bad fortune ahead.
  • Rugby is basically the local religion as Fiji has the highest number of players per capita, and there’s a war dance the team performs before the match, and it’s called cibi.
