How we as backpackers went on a Bahamas cruise on our around the world adventure?
When we started our trip back in September 2015, we didn't have a fix itinerary. Luckily, otherwise we definitely wouldn't see The Bahamas. We were in South America looking for the best way to get to Los Angeles, as from there we had a flight to Down Under. Why fly directly to LA if we can have 2 stopovers for the same price? So we bought tickets to
Miami, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
I was wandering in the www, when I stumbled over some dirt cheap Bahama cruises. In that moment it hit me – we could do this. We were on the way for a little longer, always sleeping in average rooms, sometimes sharing bathrooms, we haven’t gone to fancy restaurants since we left home and we haven’t had a break from travelling since. We need some luxury!
So we booked a cheap 5-days-Bahamas cruise from Miami. It was our first time in the Bahamas and we totally loved it. Our itinerary included 3 islands: Grand Bahama, Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay. You probably know the first two, but where in the world is that third one? It's a small paradise in the middle of the ocean, owned by the cruise company, because all mayor cruise lines were able to buy islands in the Bahamas or Caribbean. They transformed them to paradises, accessible only to their guests. So, to visit Great Stirrup Cay, you have to be on a Norwegian cruise, other cruise lines like MSC, Royal Caribbean etc. have their own islands.
Itinerary
The first day we embarked the ship around noon and went straight to the buffet to have some European food – we have to admit, we really missed food from home in South America. I had a huge bowl of lettuce, which was swimming in olive oil and balsamic, Jure went straight for the Wiener schnitzel. In the afternoon we set sail and cruising past Miami at dusk was wow. The next day Grand Bahama awaited us – we had a lazy day on the beach, just enjoying life. On the third day we disembarked in Nassau and we could visit the huge Atlantis hotel and waterpark, but we went to the other famous Atlantis in Dubai so we didn't feel the desire for a pool if we had an amazing white sand beach just steps away. Yes, you guessed it probably: we had a beach day, again. On the fourth day we were tendered to a small island, Great Stirrup Cay, and we were blown away by its beauty. Turquoise Ocean, white sand, colourful snorkelling and all the facilities on the island were free. We had an amazing day there, actually one of the best on this trip.
How to afford it
If you're in Miami, the world capital for cruises, and have some spare days, search the web for last minute offers. A 5-day cruise can be as cheap as 199 USD (our price), but notice, tax is added and cruise ships have a daily service charge (around 13 USD per person per day). But still: compared to 5 nights in Miami, all food, soft drinks and transport (hey, you'll be visiting The Bahamas), this is a great deal!
Our tips for budget travellers in need for some luxury:
- Book last minute – cruise ships like to have full staterooms rather than empty
- Book an inside state room – the cheapest cabin will do for a few days, especially if you're going to be there only to sleep.
- Don't worry about food, you will not be hungry
- Drinks are very expensive, so if you're on a budget just don't order any. But that doesn't mean you'll be thirsty ;) In all self-service restaurants soft drinks, coffee and tea are free.
- Travel in low season
- Go on a cruise during the week, weekend cruises are more expensive
We were very sceptical before the cruise, but we quite liked it at the end and we think it's a cheap way to visit The Bahamas. And to be honest, we needed a few days of luxury – so if you're in Miami and have time, go for it. You won’t regret it.
